Administrative / biographical background:

The bulk of this collection relates to the career of William H Wood, architect who began his career with the Newcastle architects Oliver and Leeson, rising eventually to partnership, the firm then being known as Oliver, Leeson and Wood. In 1910 Wood began negotiating with Charles Hodgson-Fowler, architect with a view to becoming his partner in the practice then operating from The College, Durham. However, early in 1911, Hodgson-Fowler died, and Wood took over his practice entirely, firstly operating from both Durham and Newcastle, but by mid-1912 he was based solely at 20 Collingwood Street, Newcastle.

In January 1927 William Wood took a partner, Edmund Oakley, and the practice, now trading as Wood and Oakley, moved to 9 Eldon Square, Newcastle. Wood and Oakley disappear from trade directories after 1939, and none of the records in this collection relate to a date later than this. 1939 is therefore the likely date when William Wood either retired or died.

The collection consists of records of the practice of Charles Hodgson-Fowler up to 1911, and after that the records are W H Wood or Wood and Oakley. Some plans of Oliver and Leeson are also included, and are always identified as such. These probably represent work done by Wood when with that firm.

Both Hodgson-Fowler and Wood specialised in ecclesiastical architecture and schools. They undertook commissions from all over England and Wales, and occasionally Scotland. Plans produced by both practices have been distributed to record offices all over the country, and only those relating to Tyne and Wear have been retained here. However, the architects' notebooks and most of the filing system have not been distributed.
