Administrative / biographical background:

Founded by James Knott (1855 - 1934) , later Sir James Knott, in the 1870s, the company's first steamship was the Saxon Prince in 1881. The River Plate Agency based in Buenos Aires with depots also in Rosario and Montevideo was established in the 1890s.

 

Two of Knotts three sons were killed in the First World War and the company was subsequently sold to Furness Withy, Knott retiring abroad.
