The Durham and Sunderland Railway Bill received royal assent on 13 August 1834, at which point £18,000 still had to be subscribed before the powers of the Act could be put in force. Meetings were held in Sunderland and Durham and appeals were made through the local press, following which the required capital was raised.

 

In 1846 the Company was taken over by the York and Newcastle, later York, Newcastle and Berwick Company, one of the original members of the North Eastern Railway Company on its creation in 1854 (see DT.NER3)
