Administrative / biographical background:

On 2 November 1852, a scheme was submitted to the shareholders of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Company, the York and North Midland Company and the Leeds Northern Company, for their permanent union. Later that year agreement was reached and arrangements were made for joint working of traffic from 1 April 1853.

An Act of Parliament to legalise the amalgamation finally received royal assent on 31 July 1854 and the North Eastern Railway Company came into being. Within three months, the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway Company was also amalgamated.

When it was formed, the North Eastern Railway Company comprised 720 miles of railway, 26 miles of waterway and 44 acres of dock space.

Its last public timetable was issued on 2 October 1922, before it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (see DT/NER2).
