Administrative / biographical background:

The Byermoor mission was established in 1869 largely due to the influx of people into the area seeking work in the Durham coalfields. It was initially known as Burnopfield but in 1876 the new church and graveyard were built a mile away at Byermoor. A school was built, attached to the Church in 1883.
