Administrative / biographical background:

St Hilda's Roman Catholic Church began its life as St Hilda's School Chapel in 1905, when it became separate from the parish of St Benet's, Monkwearmouth.

 

The building quickly proved inadequate and St Hilda's Church itself was opened in 1909.
