This mission was founded by Canon Bamber as an off-shoot of St Mary's Church in 1860. The site for the church was in Church Street, and the church and presbytery were built and were opened on 8 December 1861. The Church was served for a time from St Mary's Church but its own priest was appointed in 1862 and it became a separate mission.

St Patrick's Church closed in 1985 and the parish incorporated into that of St Cecilia and St Patrick, Ryhope Road.
