Administrative / biographical background:

Silksworth parish council was formed in 1894. On 1 April 1937 after the County of Durham Review Order, 1937, it was transferred from Houghton le Spring Rural District to Sunderland Rural District. After the County of Durham (Sunderland Rural Parishes) Confirmation Order, 1946, part of the civil parish was transferred to Herrington C.P. and part to Tunstall C.P. The remaining part of the parish was extended to include a section of Tunstall C.P. separate from the afore mentioned.

 

After the Sunderland Extension Act, 1950, which came into operation 1 April 1951, part of the civil parish was transferred to Sunderland County Borough and Civil Parish.

 

Finally, through the Sunderland Order, which came into operation 1 April 1967, Silksworth Civil Parish was abolished. Part was transferred to Sunderland County Borough and Civil Parish, part was transferred to Houghton le Spring Urban District and Civil Parish.
