Administrative / biographical background:

The Mission began in Byker when in 1877 Bishop Chadwick opened the old school chapel. In 1884 the new school chapel was opened in Felton Street as by this time the Catholic population had shifted to that area. The Mission was served by St Dominic's Priory Chapel at this time (for records of this Church see C.NC75). The new church at Byker was built in 1898 but the area did not become a Parish until 1907; most of these records begin at that date.
