Administrative / biographical background:

Originally a Presbyterian church, services began in 1875 in the Albert Hall, at the corner of Shields Road and Flora Street, the opening service being conducted by Dr J Collingwood Bruce. In 1877 the mission became Byker Presbyterian Church, changing its name to Heaton in 1881. A hall was built in Denmark Street in the same year. This was replaced in 1891 by a hall and classrooms followed by a new Presbyterian church in Heaton Road, opened in 1896. The foundation stone of the hall was laid by William Dobson, shipbuilder, who also performed the opening ceremony of the church. The church burned down in 1991, but has subsequently reopened.
