Administrative / biographical background:

In 1798 the Methodist New Connexion established a chapel in Hood Street, Newcastle (then known as Manor Chare) which was known first as the Bethel Chapel but later the Salem Chapel. This chapel closed in 1876 and the congregation transferred to a new Salem Chapel built at the corner of Camden Street and Falconar Street, Shieldfield, in 1877 and opened in 1878. This chapel was part of the Newcastle Central Circuit. Following the union of MNC, Bible Christians and United Methodist Free Church in 1907 Salem became a United Methodist church. In 1934 the church became part of the newly-formed Central and Sandyford Circuit. The church suffered bomb damage in September 1941 and closed shortly afterwards. The congregation transferred to Sandyford Road Methodist Church (see C.NC36).
