Administrative / biographical background:

The church was established in 1869 to serve the high Irish population that had settled in the area. One of the main contributors was the Lamb family. Initially the church was to be called St Patricks but when Georgina Lamb, who had converted to Catholicism, died, the church was dedicated to St George in her honour. Before 1869 the church was served from the church of S S Mary and Thomas Aquinas in Stella.
