Administrative / biographical background:

Before the laying of the Foundation stone of St Bede's Church in 1860, mass was celebrated at 175 High Street by Father E J Kelly. Father Kelly was responsible for raising money and making arrangements for the construction of a Catholic Church in Jarrow. The Church was consecrated on 27 December 1861.
