Physical description: 13 Series

Accession 1059

Administrative / biographical background:

The Northumberland Aged Mineworkers' Homes Association was formed in 1900 to build cottages for retired miners who were evicted, on retirement, from their colliery houses. The county was divided into areas so that retired miners could remain in their home locality, and working miners within each area paid a levy to provide retired miners with free coal.

Money was also raised by the Northern Miners' Homes Cup football competition.

The Throckley Group originally included the Blucher, Coronation, Maria, Caroline, Isabella and Havannah pits, the latter being the last to close.
