Administrative / biographical background:

The parish was founded in 1850 as the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Wilfrid, Hillgate, at first using the top floor of a bonded warehouse. It was very soon rededicated to St Joseph, but for the twelve months between the destruction of the Hillgate Chapel and the building of St Joseph's Church, mass was said in the 'Long Room', Queens Head Yard, Mirk Lane. This 'Long Room' was later used for mission purposes under the name of All Saints.
