Administrative / biographical background:

This Association was formed on 20 December 1875 by the Licensed Victuallers and Beer Retailers of Jarrow, Hebburn, Willington Quay and Howden. Their initial aim was to protect themselves from fines levied in the Quarter Sessions Court regarding drunkenness in their customers. The Association had sixty members initially, but in 1976 it was amalgamated with the North Eastern District of the National Union of Licensed Victuallers due to lack of support.
