Administrative / biographical background: |
The family were merchants and shipowners in Poole until 1852, when Robert Horne Penney (1822 - 1902) took over the shipping business of his cousin, and subsequently father-in-law, Edward Lucas (1803 - 1874), in Southwick. Robert Horne Penney's brother George Penney remained in Poole. The family were almost all Quakers, both in Poole and in Sussex - where they attended the Lewes and Chichester Monthly Meeting. Several members held office. |
