Description:

William Culpeper of Wakehurst [in Ardingly], bt, lord of the manor of Wickham, to George Parson of Clayton, yeoman

 

A yard of copyhold land called Swilland (30a) in Clayton, (between Collins Land and Northfields), quitrent 3s 0d, fealty, suit of court and other services

 

Recites: disputes between the lord and tenants of the manor concerning fines, heriots and other customs and services

 

WC agrees that if future GP and his successors may hold by fealty, suit of court and the quitrent of 3s 0d, a fine of 6d certain and a heriot of 6d certain in lieu of all services; GP may without penalty set up, pull down, allow to decay, carry away, alter, change or otherwise dispose of all houses, barns and buildings; cut or clear timber, woods and underwoods; lease; carry grass, hay, straw or other compost off the tenement; WC shall not seize the tenement for any act of GP nor let it during the minority of any child; GP may sue in the king's courts at Westminster or elsewhere for any matter concerning the tenement; lists fees to be taken by the steward for different transactions; GP to surrender the tenement into WC's hands within a month and receive a grant on the above terms
