Various deeds and cognate documents relating to properties in Avebury and Winterbourne Monkton, 1606-1895(24):

 

Exemplification of a Common Recovery, of Francis Palmer, knight, and William Atkinson, esq., versus Thomas Owen (vouchee: Sebastian Harvie), affecting the manor of Winterbourne Monkton, 1606.

 

Lease for seven years by Richard Smith of West Kennet in Avebury, gent, and his son Richard, to Francis Popham of Littlecote in Ramsbury, esq., of part of a capital messuage in West Kennet, 1723.

 

Conveyances, Declarations, etc., 1768-1895, concerning various messuages and lands in Avebury and Winterbourne Monkton, the property of the Brown family, apparently acquired by Francis Leyborne Popham of Littlecote, esq., in 1852 and 1861. Included is a copy of the Will of John Brown of Avebury, gent., 1834 (proved P.C.C. 1839), whereby he makes various bequests to his wife Catherine and his daughter Elizabeth, and devises his estates in Avebury and Winterbourne Monkton to his sons John and George. (Twenty-two documents).

 

Deeds and cognate documents relating to separate properties in Chilton Foliat, 1704-88(6), 1710-92(5), 1723-1833(24), 1735-1834(15), 1744-77(14), 1752-94(10), 1768-1832(7), 1772(2), 1773-1823(7), 1779(3), and 1817(3), and to miscellaneous properties, 1658(1), and 1792-1867(6).

 

The following copies of Wills were found in the bundles: (a) William Bodkin of Chilton, maltster, 1744, containing bequests to his kinsman George Holloway; (b) George Holloway of Chilton Foliat, yeoman, 1755 (noted as proved in the Archdeacon's Court of Wiltshire 1755), containing bequests to his brother Robert, and the latter's son George; (c) John Forty of Hungerford (co.Berks.), currier, 1763, containing bequests to various persons, including his brother William Forty of Great Shefford (co.Berks.), butcher, his sister Mary, wife of Thomas Smith, and John Crabb 'gatekeeper on the Salisbury Turnpike Road'; and (d) James Wiltshire of Chilton Foliat, yeoman, 1832, containing bequests to his housekeeper Catherine Rathbone.

 

Deeds and cognate documents relating to cottages in Rudge in Froxfield, 1772-1838 (10) purchased by Edward William Leyborne Popham of Littlecote in Ramsbury, General, in 1838.

 

The probate copy of the Will of Edward Ferryman of Rudge, 1765 (proved P.C.C. 1772) was found in the bundle. He makes various bequests to his brother John and sisters Mary, wife of John Sheppard, and Elizabeth Ferryman, and devises his real estate to Jane Fripense of Littlecote, spinster.
