Description:

Presentments at the court, styled court baron between 1727 and 1796, a court of survey being added for 1741. Other documents include the view of the tenants of certain nuisances and encroachments on the highway, 1725, the view of the homage (Jury in a court baron.) of persisting offences, appointment of the steward, charge by the steward to the bailiff for summoning the court, charge to the homage for conduct of the enquiry, Serjeant William Earle's opinion on a court baron's amerciaments (A pecuniary penalty assessed by the equals of the party amerced for an offence, by the commission of which he had placed himself at the mercy of the lord.) affecting a freeholder, together with a list of resiants, (Residents in a tithing, etc.) all for 1731, and lists of resiants, tenants, etc., for 1740 and 1741.

 

The manor is given as 'Compton Dando with S(h)ewards Week(e)s' [Sewardswick] in 1731, 1740-41, 1744-45, and 1752.

 

In the presentments of 1741 appears the entry: 'John Harington Eq. for drying the water with the coleworks'.

 

The years 1725-28, 1731, 1740-42, 1744-45, 1752-54, 1791-92 and 1796 are represented.
