Title: | Lord Aungier to Ormond |
Description: |
Describes, in detail the expedients, and fraudulent practices, in relation to "adventures" for lands confiscated, or intended to be confiscated in Ireland, to which the late Parliament at Westminster had recourse, in order to carry on the rebellion against his late Majesty; and more particularly the process called "doubling", according to which, says Lord Aungier, "whoever [had] first adventured £1,200; upon his advancing of £300 more, he had £3,000 allowed him, upon account", and for this £3000 had land, according to the "rates" set down for each Province respectively, in the Act;... "so that in every £3,000 thus doubled his Majesty is cheated of £1,800" [In Leinster, for every £600 a thousand acres of land were directed to be set out to the adventurer] ...The writer then adds various recommendations as to the course by which these abuses may be remedied or lessened, in the new settlement. |
