Administrative / biographical background:

Clarke Cluley & Co., formed in the late 19th century as cycle manufacturers, originally had their premises at the Globe Works, Well Street, Coventry, but later moved to a site in Gas Street. Between 1922 and 1928 the firm experimented with motor car manufacture and after that with the production of parts for textile machinery. In November 1940 the factory was heavily bombed and the Ministry of Aircraft Production issued a licence for the firm who were now trading as aero engineers, to build a new factory at Moorlands Avenue, Kenilworth. Construction began in September 1941 after the Gas Street works had again been extensively damaged by bombing in April. The firm remained at Kenilworth for many years before moving to Siskin Drive, Baginton.
