Administrative / biographical background:

The Workers' Music Association was founded in 1936 in an effort to bring together existing musical organisations under the auspices of the labour movement and Trade Union activity. Ten years after its formation, under the influence of the then General Secretary, William Sahnow, the first Summer School was held in Edinburgh. By 1954 the Summer School had a permanent residence at Wortley Hall near Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the Summer Schools still run today.

The recordings in this series include interviews by Charles Parker with students and performers at the Summer School in 1961 and also with members of the WMA. They also feature live music, singing, rehearsals and discussion at the 1961 Summer School. Other themes include mention of the Americanisation of popular culture at MS 4000/5/2/1/3. The final recording in the series is of a lecture given by Charles Parker to the WMA Summer School on the radio ballads and the oral tradition
