Administrative / biographical background:

Corkhill and Job was a firm of auctioneers, valuers, estate agents and furniture removers based in Grange Road, Birkenhead. The firm was reportedly established in 1848 by Daniel Corkhill, a cabinetmaker, who was later joined by his son, Mr John Lloyd Corkhill, trading until 1886 as Corkhill and Son. As the activities of the firm grew the premises underwent numerous extensions, including the building of a large warehouse in c. 1871, and in c.1879 the extension onto the adjacent site of an old butcher's shop. In 1886 the firm built a distinguished new building on this site, known as the 'Central Auction and Storage Rooms' no.86-86a Grange Road. The first sale was held in these rooms on 19 October 1886. In 1888 the concern was purchased by Mr Robert A.H. Job of Oxton, who took his son, Robert Norman Job into partnership in 1909.
