Administrative / biographical background: |
In the late 1850's, John Roby, a brass founder and copper smith, set up a brass foundry on the west side of Mellings foundry in Rainhill, to make brass fittings for ships. By 1861 he was employing twelve men and five boys and had already built Roby's Cottages alongside his works to house his workmen - probably the first industrial housing in Rainhill. The Foundry later became Thomas Utley (Rainhill) Ltd., and continued to make port lights, windows, bells and other ships' equipment from brass. |
