Administrative / biographical background: |
This company appears to have been established in July 1860 with William Busby as the principal shareholder, and with the support of certain other coach proprietors. Later in the decade the Liverpool Tramways Co. was established in competition. In 1871 the Omnibus Co. changed its name to the Liverpool Omnibus and Tramways Co. (Liverpool Review, 10 Mar. 1883, p. 11), and in 1875 amalgamated with the Liverpool Tramways Co. to form the Liverpool United Tramways and Omnibus Co. Ltd. (loc. cit.). (The 'United' appears first in Gore's 1877 Directory, with the Tramways Company still mentioned, but the latter is not mentioned in the 1878 Directory). In 1879 the Corporation undertook to purchase the tramway, leasing it back to the Company to work, commencing on 1 Jan. 1880. Finally in 1897 the Corporation took over the company and worked the tramway directly. Vols. 1, 20-22, 27 have stamped on their cover 'The Liverpool Road & Railway Omnibus Company Limited'. |
