Administrative / biographical background: |
William Heginbottom carried on a flax business at Alt Hill from the 1760's to the 1780's. He introduced cotton spinning during this period. His brother Samuel was also involved in flax dressing at Alt Hill and later in Manchester where he set up a rope works. He retired in 1810 and began building Croft House two years later. Samuel Heginbottom (nephew of the above) was a cotton spinner at Jowetts Mill, Junction Mill and Portland Mill. Junction Mill was built between 1832 and 1836. He lived in Henry Sq. William Heginbottom (cousin of the above) was also a cotton spinner and was the victim of an attempt at murder in 1830 during a dispute with his workpeople. |
