Administrative / biographical background:

A Wesleyan society in Ladybarn is first mentioned in the Stockport Circuit plan of 1786 and then again in 1804, when it was meeting in Mrs Royle's cottage. The first chapel however was opened in 1862 in Ladybarn Lane and was known as 'Mount Pleasant'. This was succeeded by a larger chapel in Royle Street, opened in 1868, which in turn was succeeded by a new church in Ladybarn Lane, opened in 1900. The Sunday school, which had continued in Royle Street, moved to new premises in Kingswood Road in 1955. Initially a member of Manchester (Oxford Road) Wesleyan Circuit, the church continues in the successor Manchester (Withington) Methodist Circuit.
