The Mission, originally called 'The East Lancashire Unitarian Mission' was founded in 1859 as a result of a 'Plan of Missionary Action' adopted by the Provincial Assembly of Lancashire and Cheshire at its annual meeting held on 30th June of that year. The area served by the mission included Bolton, Bury and the part of Lancashire lying to the north of those towns.
