Administrative / biographical background:

The Ackers family seem to have been active as timber merchants in the late 18 Century. The first member of the family to have been undertaking the business was Holland Ackers. The premises was situated along the banks of the Irwell in Salford where the river follows a horse shoe meander and the main throughfare for traffic is The Crescent.
