"A journey made by the Earl of Sussex, Lord Deputy of Ireland, when he went over in England, and left the government to the Lord Chancellor and Sir Henry Sydney as Lords Justices in his absence."

Saturday, 4th December, [1557.] Thomas Earl of Sussex, Viscount FitzWaters, departed Killmaynahan, with my Lady his wife, to Houth, where that night he took shipping into England, being accompanied through Dublin "with Mr. Treasurer, Mr. Lieutenant, Sir George Stanley, Knight Marshal, bearing the sword, until his Lordship came and went over the bridge, on which the Mayor and Recorder of Dublin and his brethren met him, and took their leave. He commended them to Mr. Treasurer, and so departed with his company, leaving the sword in custody with Sir George Stanley, to be delivered to my Lord Chancellor and Sir Henry Sydney, Vice Treasurer, after his departure.

Sunday, 5th December, Hugh Couren, Archbishop of Dublin and Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and Sir Henry Sydney, Vice Treasurer, "came from the Council Chamber with the officers of arms before them, and so came and kneeled both together. The Dean of Christ's Church, with his clergy, in their copes, with procession, received him: and being censed, and sprinkled with holy water, and kissed the cross, they both together accompanied went into St. Mary's Chapel to the high altar, and there heard mass. And after mass done, they both, kneeling before the high altar, took their oath, their patent first being read by the Master of the Rolls, John Parker, Esquire; and afterwards the sword being delivered unto them both, first to the Lord Chancellor, and he delivered it to Sir Henry Sydney, his companion, Lord Justice; and after offered both together, and there remaining until Te Deum being sung out; and so departed, the sword being borne before them both by Sir George Stanley, Knight Marshal, until they came to Peter Fourd's house, where they then dined."

The 6th February [1558.] Sir Henry Sydney was made Lord Justice of Ireland until my Lord Deputy's coming over.

Wednesday, 14th September, [1558.] my Lord Deputy came through the city, the sword being borne before him, to Christ's Church, and there offered, and went towards the sea to take shipping towards the island of Scotland. Sunday, 18th September, Sydney was made Lord Justice till the Deputy's return. The 10th November my Lord Deputy received the sword again in Christ's Church.

On----- [Blank in MS.] December Sydney was made Lord Justice till the Lord Deputy's return, and further knowledge of the Queen's pleasure.
