Manuscript note: '2nd para p.11 Notes on Mr Balfour's letter. I personally if I had a vote would not support a man of this kind. But it is for the electors of N Manchester to judge whether such a man can be considered fairly representative of them. P.13: 'Even the poor consolations of a libel action' etc because they have not been libelled. HC might enjoy these consolations: I know lawyers say that my communication was 'privileged'; but if his object is to clear his character rather than obtain damages a libel action would server his purpose if he is innocent.' On the reverse: 'Authorities: a relative of the Wyndhams, a cousin of Mrs Cust's, two connections of the Brownlows; Lady Maude Wolmer: 'a proper going scoundrel'.
