Administrative / biographical background:

Wynne Edwin Baxter was born at Lewes in 1844. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1867 and held the office of coroner for 44 years at Sussex, East Middlesex, then East London and the Tower of London. He also worked as a member of the City firm of solicitors Wynne Baxter and Keeble, 9 Laurence Poultney Hill. He was interested in literature and possessed one of the most valuable Milton collections in the country. He served as chairman of the Stoke Newington Public Libraries Committee for some years.

 

W.E. Baxter lived at 170 Stoke Newington Church Street since at least 1883. He died in 1920.

 

Francis William Baxter, the son of W.E. Baxter also lived at the above address until his death in 1932. At that date Church Row, which had been owned, or held in trust by the Baxter family, was surrendered for demolition. F.W. Baxter also trained as a solicitor. He had a keen interest in local history and was a member of the Stoke Newington Libraries Committee for 20 years. He was secretary of the Stoke Newington Literary and Scientific Society and gave several lectures of local interest.
