Marla was founded in 1927 by Marla Goodman, who opened a dress shop in Mare Street. The business expanded and later opened shops in the West End, Finsbury Park and Stratford Broadway. There was also a short lived branch in Northampton opened during the Second World War and closed in the 1950s. The business was run at the time of deposit by Cllr Bernard Lansman.
