Details of IOR/L/MIL/5/42-141
Reference: IOR/L/MIL/5/42-141
Title: Medal Rolls
Description:

The volumes consist of original and copy nominal rolls, extracts from Military Letters, General Orders, correspondence and receipts, used by the Military Department at East India House and the India Office for the actual ordering and despatch of medals. The sub-series is in no sense a 'formal' one and most of the volumes were made up from loose papers at a later date with frequent duplication. Indeed only some of the medals issued to the armies in India are covered.

The nominal rolls are normally arranged in order of regimental precedence and they are often annotated with details of death and next-of-kin; few are indexed. Those covering the Company's armies and the Indian Army are essentially concerned with European personnel only and the names of Indian recipients rarely appear (except, however, in L/MIL/5/87-103).

The following medals are covered:

L/MIL/5/42-44 East India Company's General Service Medal 1799-1826 (Army of India Medal)
