Will of Sir Thomas Barker of Linden, co. Rutland, bart.: to be buried in the chancel of LINDEN: gives to my Lady Barker £10 to buy mourning; to brother(in-law) Parsons £50 and to his wife, testator's sister, £40 a year for life, to begin at death of said Lady Barker, charging Bridge Close in LINDEN with the payment, being part of Lady Barker's jointure; to niece Mary Leigh £100 and her sister Jane £100, to be paid on attaining 21 years respectively; to niece Mary Parsons £200 when 21; to cousin Mrs. Phil. Abraham of Blaston £4 a year for life, and to her sister Anne Bower of London £5 a year for life; to Ephraim Wright £5 a year for life, and to Mrs Goodrith Ringrose of London £5 a year for life, all payable out of lands in LINDEN; to Mrs. Eliz. Barker, daughter of Augustine Barker of Luffenham, £200 when 21; to servant John Keighly the house and homestead where he lives and 1 cow pasture in Cottiers Close in LINDEN for life and £21; to servant John Bell £20; to Mary Hillam, testator's housekeeper, for life the house and homestead called Peg's House, 2 cow pasture in Cottiers Close and Bulls Meadow, 4 acres in LINDEN, and £20; all other household servants with testator at his death £5 each; all his shepherds 40 shillings each; to poor of LINDEN £5 a year for ever, which with £3 a year given by testator's brother (in-law?) Chris. Dighton, to be charged out of Holme Close in LINDEN free of tax, to be distributed as lord of the manor and rector of LINDEN think fit: for payment of all debts and legacies, not already charged upon the estate, testator gives to Mathew Johnson, senior, esq., Thomas Trist the elder, of Metford, Henry Green of Rolston and John Goodman of Blaston, gents., all his lands in HAMBLETON and MANTON, also all his goods, chattels, leases for years and personal estate, and appoint them executors of his will and give them £50 each: any overplus remaining he gives to such person as for the time being the manor of LINDEN shall belong, desiring that his leasehold lands in LINDEN, held of the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln be reserved to the said manor: testator bequeathes the manor of LINDEN and advowson of the church and lands there and elsewhere in Rutland, not otherwise disposed, to his cousin Samuel Barker, son and heir of Augustine Barker, for life, and afterwards to his said trustees and executors for life of said Samuel upon trust to preserve the contingent estates, but permitting Samuel to take the profits thereof during his life, remainders to the eldest son and his lawfully begotten heirs male, in default of such issue to the second, third and other sons successively and heirs male; in default of such issue to Henry Green for life, after determination of that estate to other 3 trustees for life of Henry Green upon trust, (etc.); provided Samuel Barker shall have power to appoint any part of the estate in LINDEN not exceeding £100 per annum unto any woman he shall marry for her life for her jointure: Witn: Math.
