Title: Documents relating to property of Babingtons of Rothley Temple
Description:

This deposit mainly consists of title deeds to the lands of the Babingtons in Cossington, Rothley, Keyham, Sileby, Loughborough, Leicester and in Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire. There are however some interesting account books of William Babington (1669-1678), Thomas Babington (1674-1707, 1719-1734) and Mrs Mary Cardale (1725-1769). Accounts of labourers wages (1719-1732) of grain sold and fuel and wine bought (1719-1923) and of farming valuations (1779-1811 are noteworthy as are the papers regarding fishing rights on the River Soar (1750) and Cossington Enclosure (1666) Butler's account books (1787-1790) and household and brewing accounts (1784-1797, 1806-1810) are also to be found in this part of the collection.

This collection was partially catalogued in 1931. As the initial arrangement, which appears to be chronological, has been retained, a topographical index has been compiled at the rear.

Administrative / biographical background:

In 1529 Humphrey Babington leased the manor of Rothley from the Knights Hospitallers, the successor order to the Templars. In 1565 the family bought the manor, where they remained until 1846, when it was sold to the Parkers. In 1893 Harry Parker sold the estate to Frederick Merttens.
