Administrative / biographical background: |
The deeds and papers in this collection relate principally to estates in Saddleworth and other parts of the former West Riding of Yorkshire, Middlewich, Stockport, Knutsford and other areas of the County of Cheshire and Manchester, Ashton-under-lyne, Oldham, and surrounding areas, formerly part of the County of Lancashire. The area called Saddleworth merits some explanation because of its complex administrative history. Saddleworth now forms part of Greater Manchester County but formerly it was the township and parochial chapelry of Saddleworth-cum-Quick, which took its name from the hamlet of Saddleworth situated about 5 miles from Oldham. Saddleworth was a chapelry within the large Lancashire parish of Rochdale but for secular purposes it was a township within the West Riding Wapentake hundred or division of a shire of Agbrigg. In comparison with many other northern townships, it was divided into four administrative divisions called meres: Friar-mere, Lord's-mere, Quick-mere and Shaw-mere. In 1869 Saddleworth was elevated to parish status and for civil purposes was considered a distinct parish still answerable to the Wapentake of Agbrigg in the West Riding of Yorkshire. In ecclesiastical matters it continued to answer to Rochdale. |
