Administrative / biographical background:

These letters concern the purchase of land by the East Lancashire Railway Company from James Whitaker of Broadclough for the Bacup Branch Line and for Bacup passenger station. The land was situated in the township of Newchurch and Spotland and was part of Whitaker's Rockliffe estate. An agreement was made between the parties on 25 October 1851 but subsequent disputes arose over the validity of the award made by George Powell on 27 July 1849 and the accuracy of the plans. The chief correspondents are James Whitaker, Thomas Dugdale, the chairman of the East Lancashire Railway Company, and J. Perring the Company's chief engineer.
