Administrative / biographical background:

Soroptimists International was founded in Oakland, California, in the 1930s, the female equivalent of male Rotarian clubs. Its stated aims are to advance women's status in society, to encourage high ethical standards in business and professional life, and to promote ideals of international understanding and female friendship ("Soroptimist" means roughly "the best of sisters"). The society concerns itself with public welfare through local and national charitable efforts, and contributes towards civic, social and industrial development. Membership is by invitation only, and is limited to one member of each occupational class.

The Soroptimist Club of Preston held its inaugural meeting on 24 June 1938, and changed its name to the Preston Club of Soroptimists International in March 1974.
