Administrative / biographical background: |
The administration of the River Ribble as a navigable waterway was undertaken by various Navigation Companies, from 1806 to 1883, in which latter year the responsibility was undertaken by Preston Borough Council under the Ribble Navigation and Preston Dock Act. The records deposited by the Borough Council contains both pre and post 1883 records (see CBP catalogue) The following records relate, on the whole, to the day to day activities of the Port, in its two main departments, the Dock Manager's and the Ribble Engineer's Offices. The former was responsible for cargoes, personnel etc., while the latter oversaw the upkeep of the fabric of the dock - both buildings and vessels - and all dredging activities. Unfortunately many of the records were lost or destroyed as a result of the Dock Offices being flooded. |
