For the sake of clarity the records here have been divided into several sections. The first two sections contain records relating specifically to the trust estate under the will of Thomas Wintle, and to the business of the mills, brewery and mineral water works, while a third section contains records of the letting of public houses and other real estate. The remaining sections contain personal and micellaneous items. |

Administrative / biographical background: |
The business interests of Wintle and Sons included at various times flour mills, a brewery, a mineral water factory and a quantity of freehold and leasehold properties, including public houses, shops, farms and dwelling houses. Unfortunately the records which survive here are too fragmentary to provide a comprehensive picture of the course of the business or the dates at which various sections of these interests were acquired or sold. However it is clear that the bulk of the business had been built up by 1888 when Thomas Wintle died, leaving his estate to trustees to hold for his children. When these trustees in turn died, the trust devolved on F.C. and O.A. Wintle. |
