A large file of papers tied at the head in a parchment cover

 

Nearly all the leases are between members of the Brydges family and their tenants.

 

March's. Abbreviation for Marchioness of Carnarvon.

 

Mge. Fine. Many of the leases impose a fine on the tenant to be paid on the marriage of the eldest daughter of the Marchioness or in the case of the male members of the family - of the eldest son.

 

Dog and cock. Many of the leases have services imposed on the tenant e.g. to keep a dog and/or a cock. Dogs are often specified as spaniels, hounds, greyhounds etc. Cocks are Game cocks.

 

Haulage. A frequent service was the requirement to haul a yearly load/ waggon load/ ton of coal or lime from Howle Hill either to a stated place or 'not more than 12 miles from Wilton'.
