Administrative / biographical background:

A Local Board of Health for Coleford was set up in September 1871 and remained in existence until superseded by the Urban District Council in December 1894. In 1935 this was dissolved by virtue of the County of Gloucester Review Order and subsequently the town came under the control of the West Dean Rural District Council
