By 1841, he was at London University, and letters tell of the 1841 fire at the Tower of London, his exasperation at the expense of the christening of Queen Victoria's child in 1842, and personal details of his life there. In 1845 he toured the north and Scotland, and in 1847 writes from Belgium and Paris. His impressions of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and finally the letters he wrote on his Lake District honeymoon in 1855.
