Administrative / biographical background:

These records commence with an account of the meetings leading to foundation of the "Devon and Exeter Refuge for Discharged Prisoners" in 1835. Housed at first in Bradninch Buildings, Gandy Street, by 1850 it was at Lawn Lodge, Sidwell Street. In 1858 the institution moved to new premises (which still stand in 1985) in Polsloe Road and became the "Devon and Exeter Female Reformatory and Refuge for Discharged Prisoners." In 1927 the title became the "Devon and Exeter Girls Training School." From the name of its home between 1960 and closure in 1983, it was finally known as "Farringdon House School."
