William Bemrose set up his own printing business in Derby in 1826-27, in which his sons Henry Howe and William jr became partners in 1858. First Mayor of the enlarged Borough of Derby in 1877-1878, he was active in public life, church affairs and charitable organisations, as well as becoming first Chairman of the family business when it was incorporated as Bemrose & Sons Ltd in 1891. H H Bemrose served as Member of Parliament for Derby from 1895-1900 and was knighted in August 1897. He received the freedom of Borough of Derby in 1910 and his funeral in May 1911 was an important civic event.
Henry Howe's son, also named Henry but known as Arnold (b. 1857), joined the family business in 1879, becoming a Director and Deputy Chairman.
