Administrative / biographical background:

In 1844 the Midland Railway Company was formed by the amalgamation of 3 companies: the North Midland, the Midland Counties, and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway Companies. The Locomotive Works at Siddals Road, Derby were originally built by the North Midland Railway Company in 1840. The Carriage and Wagon Works at Litchurch Lane, Derby were built in 1876.

In 1923 the London Midland and Scottish Railway was established (under the Railways Act 1921) by amalgamating the Midland Railway Company and other railway companies such as the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, which operated the Newton Heath Carriage and Wagon Works in Manchester.

By the Transport Act 1949, the London Midland Region of British Rail was set up on 1 January 1948.
