The estate papers include title deeds, rentals, accounts and plans for estates belonging to the Wilmot and Horton families in Catton, Walton on Trent, Rosliston, Coton, Weston on Trent, Aston on Trent, Shardlow, Stapenhill, Mickleover, Osmaston, Ockbrook/Derbyshire. Outcounty estates in Staffordshire (Barton under Needwood, Tatenhill, Rugeley and Audley), Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Leicestershire, Cheshire, Kent and Warwickshire and estates of related families such as the Eardleys and Buswell, are included
Manorial records include Barton under Needwood/Staffordshire 1414-1926, Audley/Staffordshire 1368-1576 and Birmingham/Warwickshire 1704-1734
Correspondence with the steward at Osmaston 1739-1771 includes information on the rebuilding and redecoration of the house, planning and implementing the layout of gardens and parklands, and household administration including references to servants. Other household records include eighteenth and nineteenth century medical recipes
Both the Wilmot and the Horton families were involved to some degree in local politics and administration during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as shown by records of collecting taxes and other levies
The correspondence series are of particular importance
The correspondence of (Sir) Robert Wilmot (1708-1772) is arranged chronologically in volumes of incoming letters covering his work as Resident Secretary to twelve successive viceroys of Ireland (1737-1772) and as Secretary to the Lord Chamberlain (1758-1772). These include references to well-known artists such as David Garrick and Sir Joshua Reynolds. There is also correspondence 1756-1764 with the Dukes of Devonshire and Newcastle on political and other matters including the war in North America
From 1737 virtually all Irish government business passed through Wilmot's hands and he also inherited files which predate his tenure of office. From 1746 his counterpart at Dublin Castle, Thomas Waite, was a frequent and increasingly frank correspondent. The series includes many of Wilmot's letters to Waite which were returned at Wilmot's request. The correspondence is particularly important owing to the loss of the Chief Secretary's papers for the period as a result of the Four Courts explosion in Dublin in 1922
Sir Robert John Wilmot, later Wilmot-Horton (1784-1841) was an assiduous correspondent and was in contact by letter with most of the important political figures of the day including George and Stratford Canning, the 14th Earl of Derby, Lord Grenville, John Gladstone, Lord Goderich, William Huskisson, Lord Palmerston and Sir Robert Peel
Wilmot-Horton's main interests were the problems of poverty and over-population and issues of political economy. Apparently much influenced by Malthus, he saw emigration as the main answer to these challenges. The relocation of surplus, chiefly pauper, populations from Britain and Ireland to the colonies of Australia and Canada was a considerable pre-occupation. Associated with this main interest were concern about reform of the poor law, taxes and currency, the management of Ireland, the Catholic question, slavery and the West Indies. Among his correspondents were Thomas Malthus, David Ricardo, William Nassau Senior, Maria Edgeworth, Robert Owen, Sydney Smith, Thomas Tooke, Robert Torrens, Sir Thomas Brisbane, Francis Forbes, John Galt and William Wilberforce
There is some evidence of sorting and re-arrangement of Wilmot-Horton's correspondence in the 1830s or 1840s. The present sequence and numbering of the letters is largely artificial and inherited. Series of letters is largely artificial and inherited. Series of letters, described as bound volumes, are gathered in limp bindings with a general description of the contents on the front cover. The main series are:
1st series of bound volumes
Letters arranged in alphabetical sequence of correspondence relating to Sir Robert John Wilmot-Horton
2nd series of bound volumes
Letters arranged by subject relating to Sir Robert John Wilmot-Horton
3rd series of bound volumes

The Irish correspondence consists of volumes of incoming and outgoing letters arranged in chronological order relating to (Sir) Robert Wilmot as Resident Secretary to Viceroy of Ireland 1739-1772 and as (Deputy) Secretary to the Lord Chamberlain 1758-1772
There is also a sequence of individual letters c1630-1880 arranged in chronological order including family and local affairs, court gossip, the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-1746 and Ireland

"ABC Sequence"
Sir Robert John Wilmot Horton (1784-1841) was under-secretary of state for War and the Colonies, 1821-1828 and subsequently governor and commander-in-chief of Ceylon, 1831-1837. All the items in this sequence relate to him and reflect his interests in pauper emigration and economic policy, in addition to his governmental duties and his estate administration in Derbyshire
Limp-bound volumes form the majority of the sequence. The term "ABC Sequence" was in use before the Record Office became involved in the listing of the records - it describes an alphabetical arrangement by correspondent from A to Z. This has been retained in the interim list, but is not necessarily final. Some volumes turn out to contain more draft replies by Wilmot Horton or despatches and material from other parties than letters from the individual concerned. There have been some mistaken attributions prior to binding. In addition, some letters are only present in (contemporary) copy form - the originals are to be found in bound volumes of "Letters from Private Correspondents" (if these survive)
Covering dates of letters, where given in the text, indicate if there is a gap of more than a year between letters. Addresses, where these are given, indicate that most of the letters involved were sent from there

'Bound volumes'
This is another artificial grouping of documents, created before the involvement of the Record Office in listing. Although many of the items are from the time of Sir Robert John Wilmot Horton, some come from the two Sir Robert John Wilmots in the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries
There is no real distinction between the 'bound volumes', the 'subject sequence' and the 'ABC sequence': for example, D3155/WH 2954 relates closely in content to the items on Ceylon in the subject sequence (WH 2907-2912). The format too is similar, with many limp-bound groups of letters, with a broad description of contents on the front cover (often including a number which may be part of an earlier reference system). Some volumes, though are hard covered, for example, D3155/WH 2939-2941. However, there are many individual items here, which have never been part of a bound volume, for example, the two copy deeds, D3155/WH 3076 and 3077
Many volumes bear distinct signs of examination and some kind of sorting in the 1840s (a frequent date is 1843). Before his return from Ceylon, Wilmot Horton had been discussing the making of extracts from his papers with his private secretary, George Lee (see D3155/WH 2828-2829, 2960, 2969). Quite probably, this kind of work continued after Wilmot Horton's death, perhaps with a view to publication. A number of surviving volumes (eg, D3155/WH 3020 and 3060) give some idea of the arrangement of the correspondence in the mid-nineteenth century, which should prove useful in any final classification
Earl Bathurst was secretary of state for war and the colonies between Jan 1812 and Apr 1827. The post was then held by Goderich until Sep 1827 and by Huskisson until May 1828. Of course, these men figure prominently in Wilmot Horton's correspondence and in notes and memoranda during the term of his under-secretaryship in that department

Printed in Ceylon by the Wesleyan Mission Press 1836, but not published. The subject is the will of Sir Robert Wilmot with its various late codicils. The final will left the entailed estate only to Wilmot Horton and the residue of the personalty (about £100,000) to his younger children. One adviser considered R W to be incapable of transacting business at that time - the difference of about £60,000 to Wilmot Horton would have relieved his financial difficulties considerably. The statement includes copy correspondence and a section purporting to show the jealousy of Lady Wilmot, Wilmot Horton's stepmother. Manuscript alterations and corrections are included
