Salt duties

 

Joshua Gilbert, master, and John Sicker, mate, of the sloop 'Caroline' of port of St. Ives swore that on 27 Sep. last they shipped at Liverpool 1,400 bushels of British salt for which duty had been paid by John Blackhurn & Co. to carry to salt the Hayle Copper House, St. Ives on account of John Trevenen, William Carne and Thomas Wood. They sailed form Liverpool 11 Dec. last. On 12 Dec. off Anglesey a storm blew up, continuing on 14 and 15 Dec. Next day they arrived at Hayle. During voyage the ship took in water and 96 bushels of salt were lost: ordered that Collector of Excise repay full amount of duty paid on salt lost to John Blackburn & Co.

James Sevil, master, and William Lockyer, mate, of brig 'Ann' of port of Exeter stated that on 16, 17 and 18 Mar. they shipped at Liverpool 10,584 bushels of British fishery salt to carry to Mevagissey in port of Fowey. On 21 Mar. they sailed from Liverpool and struck a sand bank in that port, and were obliged to lighten their vessel by throwing overboard some of the salt. On weighing at Liverpool 16 bushels was found to have been thrown overboard. On 24 Mar. they sailed again, ran into a storm, and shipped water. An additional 1,581 bushels of salt was lost: upon application in writing to the court, Collector of Excise ordered to cancel the bond.

Thomas Slade, master, and Thomas Jones, mate, of brig 'Betsey' of port of Fowey stated that on 18, 19, 21 and 22 Feb. last they shipped at Liverpool 800 bushels of British salt on which duty was paid by John Blackburn & Co., consigned to John Abbott and Joseph Treffry of Plymouth, they sailed on 29 Feb. and on 20 Mar. off Cornish coast the vessel ran into stormy weather and struck a rock and was sunk. All salt on board was lost: collector of Excise to allow to John Blackburn & Co. the amount of duty paid.

Thomas Slade, master and Thomas Jones, mate of brig 'Betsey' of Fowey stated that on 21 and 22 Feb. last they shipped at Liverpool 3,200 bushels of British salt on which duty paid by Crosbie and Urmson of Liverpool, salt refiners, to carry to Plymouth; 800 bushels on account of George Bayley; 600 bushels for William Purnell and Sons; 400 bushels for Thomas Cornish; 400 bushels for William Tucker; 400 bushels for Benjamin Nicholson; and 600 bushels for John Wadge and John Elliott. They sailed on 29 Feb., and on 20 Mar. en route to Plymouth the vessel ran into tempestuous weather, and struck a rock and was sunk. All salt on board was lost: Collector of Excise to allow full amount of duty to be repaid to Crosbie and Urmson.

Walter Colman Broad, master, and Thomas Williams, mate, of brig 'Two Friends' of port of Plymouth stated that on 31 Jan. and 1 Feb. last they shipped at Liverpool 2,620 bushels of British salt, on which duty paid by John Blackburn & Co., to carry to Truro on account of Thomas Tuck & Son of Truro, merchants. They sailed from Liverpool on 10 Feb. last, on 11, 12 and 13 Feb. there were violent storms, and the vessel put in to port of Phwelly [sic] in N. Wales, leaving there on 1 Mar. On 2 and 3 Mar. there were again storms. The hatches were battened down on leaving Liverpool and not opened until reaching Truro. Henry Yelland of Kenwyn, lab., employed by Thomas Tuck & Son, swore in court, that 2,364 bushels only were weighed out in Truro and that 256 bushels had been lost: Collector of Excise to repay John Blackburn & Co. full amount of duty on lost salt.
